UNLV sits just a game back of the 1st place Lobos
We all knew the Mountain West would be tough, but let’s face it, the league has exceeded even those expectaions. The UNLV Runnin Rebels are currenty in 7th place, with a record of 5-4, with a road win on Saturday. they could possibly find themselves tied for 1st. That’s the kind of parity we’ve seen this season. UNLV enters this game ridding a three game winning streak. That streak comes on the heels of perhaps their worst game of the season, now simply known as the Air Force game. Over those three games the Rebels have reduced their turnovers and been stifling on defense. They held Wyoming to 48 points on 34% shooting, including 4 made threes.
While impressive as they were, those wins came against, San Jose St, Fresno St, and Wyoming, who sit, 11, 9th and 8th in the conference respectively. Quite frankly, the game against New Mexico signals a test that Rebels teams in recent years, have failed. This team is tasked with going on the road, against a quality opponent, in what will be a hostile environment. In addition to having won 6 of their last 7 games, New Mexico has double motivation of having lost their last home game to Boise St, and the last contest against UNLV, a game in which wasn’t nearly as close as the Final score indicates. Yea all eyes will be glued to this one. It’s too late in the season for moral victories, yes it will be encouraging if the Rebels play well, however if they want to keep any sorts of hope of making this season a memorable one, they will need to walk out of the Pit with a W.
